Notes from host Chris Wienk:

These periodic podcasts have become a bit of a hit, and I just want to say thanks to everyone who downloads this one. I do intend to be a bit more regular in the coming year. I guess it would be my New Years resolution?

Anyway, today we're going to feature some music to make your holidays more festive.

Monks and Choirs of Kiev Pechersk Lavra's "Chants of the Russian Orthodox Church" is available at www.magnatune.com.

26 selected chants starting from ancient church chants to such rarities as sacred music by Rachmaninov and J.Sarti-Italian composer, who was so enraptured by Orthodox singing that in 1724 he left Italy for Russia and till the end of his days lived there. For many centuries Kiev-Pechersk (Cave) Lavra was the pride of the Orthodox world. Later on destroyed by atheists because the "heavenly like" cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin was its adornment. The cathedral choir was the legend and the magnet which attracted thousands visitors and pilgrims.

From ancient times Kolyadkas and Shchedrivkas (Christmas carols) became a symbol of Christmastime. You'll find some original Christmas chants and traditional Christmas Carols at the end of this CD.

>>Three Holies Church Choristers music
Christmas Troparion (5:15)
Christmas Svetilen (2:20)

That was a couple of selections from Three Holies Church Choristers' CD "Ancient Eastern Church Music." Available at www.magnatune.com.

The Three Holies Church in Kharkov is the only Russian Orthodox Church, where since 1995, only the ancient canonical worship singing is used for Divine services.

This CD represents the three main canonical singing traditions of the Eastern Church - Byzantine, Georgia and Old Rus, which was the foundation for further development of not only worship singing but also classical choral music.

David Grigg's Janower led the University at Albany Chamber Singers in some selections for the holidays.

We end with a few Renaissance dances that just sound so great for the holidays. From Magnatune.com, we'll listen to the Dufay Collective from their CD "A Lestampida." The Dufay Collective was formed in 1987 to explore the rich and varied repertoire of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. They are a group of musicians who work together, as their name implies, without a director.

The show opens with Estampie Real: La Quarte in the background.
Salterello is played at the end.
