2009 General Assembly
Legislative sessions that occur in odd-numbered years, like 2009, are called short sessions because they last only 30 days. Budget sessions, in even numbered years, last 60 days.
Lawmakers elect new leaders next year, and they'll do that during the first four days of the session, which begins on Tuesday, January 6th. After that, the session recesses for three weeks, with lawmakers returning on February 3rd. That's when they start considering bills and tweaking the budget, if necessary.
On March 10th, the session again recesses to give the governor time to consider vetoes. Lawmakers then return March 23rd for possible veto overrides. The 2009 session will end on March 24th.
