Ark. to take over troubled school district
(2008-07-15)
>
(UALR Public Radio) - The state will take over the financially troubled Greenland School District and dissolve its board rather than annex it to another district.

The Board of Education voted to take over the 946-student district and deferred action on a proposal to combine the district with one of six surrounding school districts. Education Commissioner Ken James says the state will send out letters dissolving the school board and will replace its superintendent with a state-appointed superintendent.

District officials asked the state to consider the takeover rather than annexing it with another district. James said state officials will monitor the district finance's during the takeover and may again consider annexation or splitting the district among two or more districts after a year.

The board also voted to classify the Decatur School District as fiscally distressed.
