State AG says term limits bill is retroactive
Edmondson appeared before lawmakers today and suggested the measure's language would make the mandated 12-year limit on terms retroactive.
But the bill's author, Rep. Trebor Worthen, says the bill is not retroactive and would only apply to statewide officials elected in 2010 and beyond. He says the bill's intent is not to prevent those who already have 12 years of service, including Edmondson, from running again.
The measure still must be passed by the Senate and approved by a vote of the people to go into effect. Currently, state lawmakers are limited to 12 years in office and the governor is limited to two four-year terms.
Aside from himself, Edmondson says Superintendent of Schools Sandy Garrett and Corporation Commissioner Bob Anthony also would be prevented from running.
