Expansion of term limits passes House committee
limited to a maximum of 12 years in office under legislation approved by a state House committee.
The bill was approved by the House Rules Committee Wednesday with bipartisan support and will now go to the full House for consideration.
Currently, state lawmakers are limited to 12 years in office, and the governor is limited to two, four-year terms. The measure by Rep. Trebor Worthen of Oklahoma City would add all statewide elected officials like the lieutenant governor and the state treasurer to the state's term limits law.
If approved by the Legislature, the change will have to be approved by a vote of the people in November. It would then apply to officeholders first elected in the 2010 election.
