Arkansas AG says county term-limits proposal too vague
(2007-04-14)
(UALR Public Radio) - The Arkansas attorney general's office says a proposed constitutional amendment that would set four-year term limits for elected county officials is too vague. The measure asks voters to approve four-year term limits for county judges, sheriffs, county and circuit clerks, assessors, tax collectors, county treasurers, justices of the peace and constables. But Attorney General Dustin McDaniel says the text of the proposal omits the offices of coroner and surveyor, even though the proposal's title refers to all county elected officials. McDaniel also says that constables are technically appointed by townships, rather than counties, and that changes should be made to clear up whether constables should be included in the measure. McDaniel says supporters can reword the proposal and submit it again.
