TN Senate Panel Revives 'Super Speeder' Bill
(2010-05-27)
(wkms) - A proposal that would fine motorists driving 25 mph over the speed limit in Tennessee as much as $500 is once again on the move in the State Senate. The Senate Finance Committee reconsidered its action on the so-called "super speeder" bill and passed the measure seven-to-three Wednesday. The proposal, which will now be scheduled for a vote on the Senate floor, failed the day before for lack of a majority.

Bill sponsor, Republican Senator Jack Johnson says the bill is needed because court rulings have found excessive speed alone isn't enough to charge motorists with reckless driving.

The House companion bill has been placed behind the budget, meaning it will be revisited if any money is left after the state's budget is set.
