(2009-08-07)

(wkms) - With the local Emancipation Celebration underway, we're marking the occasion with the story of a man who emerges as a reminder of why we celebrate freedom. Born into abject poverty in early 20th century Murray, T.R.M. Howard became one of the most prominent African American doctors in the nation, and an important voice in the American Civil Rights movement. Jacque Day looks into his early life in western Kentucky with the authors of a new biography about Howard's life and work.

This report was part of a series by Jacque Day titled "The Difference They Made." The Associated Press, Kentucky awarded the series First Place for Best Special Series-Documentary, 2009.
