The Q&A - The economic impact of arts in Paducah
(2011-02-04)
Market House Theatre in Paducah
(wkms) - In his most recent State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama told Congress about the jobs created throughout the nation's history of infrastructure development. The President said the jobs didn't just come from the projects themselves, but also the businesses that sprang up around them. This idea of one business' development rippling out to others is part of the growth or decline of any industry, even an enterprise not commonly thought of as "industry." The non-profit advocacy organization Americans for the Arts recently reported that the economic impact from the arts in and around Paducah had a 40 million dollar annual collective impact on the region's economy. One of the region's older arts organizations in the Purchase is Paducah's Market House Theatre, and Todd Hatton sat down with Executive Director Michael Cochran to talk about the report's implications and what it means for the community beyond economics.

In a prime example of economic cooperation, the theatre is hosting Bawn in the Mash Saturday, February 5. Pokey LaFarge and the South City 3 opens the show, and the doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are ten dollars at the door.
