Union County Coal Mine Owners Sued for Discrimination
(2011-09-27)
WAVERLY, KY
(wkms) -
The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has sued the owners of a mining facility in Union County, Kentucky. The EEOC alleges River View Coal of Waverly illegally refused to hire black miners at the facility. The commission filed the suit on behalf of Shawn King and a "class of black applicants," but did not say how many people were covered by the lawsuit. EEOC attorney Aimee McFerren says it appears to be the first racial discrimination suit filed against a coal company in west Kentucky.
