House Debates Hiett's Workers Comp Plan
Hiett's plan to reform state workers' compensation laws is being
considered by the lawmakers.
The proposal increases death and burial benefits for workers, makes it easier to claim benefits for disfigurement. It also encourages mediation between injured workers and their employers, gives employers more control over fees doctors charge for treating injured workers. And the bill limits attorneys fees to 20% of the amount an injured worker would get if a lawsuit had not been filed.
Supporters say the bill will save businesses $100 million a year. Opponents say it does little to help injured
workers and does nothing to reduce medical costs.
A competing workers' comp reform plan supported by Governor Henry is pending in the state Senate.
