Brookport, Illinois Mayor Judy Askew has fired the town's police chief after a tenuous and public battle between the two. Askew presented Police Chief Nheema Rodriguez-Cornelius with a letter yesterday stating the chief failed to work 40 hour weeks, produce required reports, recognize the Mayor as chief executive of the city and accusing her of unprofessional conduct. The firing comes on the heels of two months of contention during which Mayor Askew resigned then returned, demoted Rodriguez-Cornelius to officer, and eventually allowed the chief to return to her post on a conditional basis. Neither Askew or Rodriguez-Cornelius have made statements on the matter. Both have retained legal council.
