Study: 'Coaching' of Lansing hospital patients lowered readmissions
(2010-02-09)
(WKAR) -

Data from a Lansing study suggest hospitals can lower readmission rates with better "coaching" when patients are discharged. A study of 40 patients at Lansing's Ingham Regional Medical center shows readmissions within 30-days fell by 10% when caregivers more thoroughly discussed medication, follow-up and potential problems. Donna Beebe is the lead manager of the study.

"In the hospital, they do typically touch on all those things," she says. "But the coaching model is more intense. The patient takes a much more active role in their own care."

About 100 healthcare professionals from the area gather Wednesday to review progress in reducing heart patient readmissions. The day-long conference will be held at Lansing Community College's West Campus.
