Consumers Energy Plans Large-Scale Wind Farms in Michigan
(2010-02-17)
(Michigan Radio) - Consumers Energy plans to invest more than a billion dollars on wind power development in the state.

The typical customer of the Jackson-based Consumers Energy pays a $2.50 per-month surcharge on their bill right now.

That will help pay for the large wind farms Consumers plans to build in Mason and Tuscola counties.

Spokesman Dan Bishop says the company bought 60,000 acres for the wind farms.

"We've been collecting data in those areas, and those areas are favorable for moving forward on wind," Bishop says.

Consumers will be required by state law to generate 10% of its electricity by renewable energy by 2015.

Bishop says the manufacturers of the generator components will not be identified -- for competitive reasons.
