State Sends 'Race to the Top' Application to Washington LANSING, MI (Associated Press) -


Michigan has sent in its application for up to $400 million for schools through the federal Race to the Top competition. Applications are due Tuesday.

Michigan's application was signed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan and State Board of Education President Kathleen Straus. Most local school districts endorsed the state's plan but their local unions did not.

Less than half the states are expected to win a share of the more than $4 billion in Race to the Top money. But President Barack Obama on Tuesday was expected to ask Congress for an additional $1.35 billion to extend the education grant program for states.


States must amend education laws and policies to compete for a share of the money.
