Report: Stimulus saving Michigan schools jobs
(2009-11-02)
(Associated Press) - A federal report suggests six of every 10 jobs saved or created by the federal stimulus package in Michigan is tied to education.

The report Monday from the U.S. Department of Education says more than 13,600 Michigan jobs affected by the Recovery Act are in education. Last week the federal government said that about 22,500 jobs in the state had been supported by the stimulus package overall.

The recently released education job numbers were revised downward from an initial report of more than 14,000 last month.

Some Michigan schools say they may have to lay off employees despite the help from the stimulus package. State aid to schools could be slashed by nearly $300 per student or more unless the Legislature restores cuts ordered by Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
