George Might Run For Governor
(2009-01-26)
(MPRN) - Kalamazoo area state Senator Tom George might run for Governor. The Republican is filing paperwork today to form a campaign committee to explore running for Governor in 2010. George says the committee will help him decide if he can raise enough money for a competitive campaign. He says his time in the legislature and his experience as a physician would help him fix Michigan's struggling economy.

"I'm right in the areas that need to be fixed," George said. "That is our budget structure and our health care system. Both of those are important parts of the solution."

George says he expects a crowded Republican field in the gubernatorial primary. He also knows West Michigan Congressman Pete Hoekstra and Attorney General Mike Cox will have better name recognition if they follow through on their plans to run. But George thinks a crowded field might help him.

"I think in that type of a setting I can do pretty well," George said. "And a fresh face with new ideas is something that the party may need at the time."

George is in his second term in the Michigan Senate and can't run again because of term limits.
