The Michigan Writers Series presents "Music History: Dramatizing the African American Experience" at an especially appropriate time. The year 2013 marks the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation, while in 2014 it will be sixty years since the Brown v. Board of Education decision and fifty years since the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Sandra Seaton's play Music History, set on a Midwestern college campus in 1963, is a dramatization of the personal dilemmas and sacrifices of the African American college students who fought for civil rights. Students from the Department of Theatre will give a dramatic reading of selections from the play. Following the reading scholars Pero Dagbovie, Tama Hamilton-Wray, and Ken Prouty will discuss and demonstrate the ways new technology will be used to explore the meaning of the civil rights movement and the African American experience through the innovative use of the MSUAA Knowledge Network media platform for cultural engagement and outreach. |
