Raising A Stink About McDonough County Hog Farm
(2011-06-08)
Scott Schwerer
(wium) - The McDonough County Board is hearing from opponents of the proposed Shamrock Acres large-scale hog farm.

Board Member Leroy Brown showed his colleagues on the Law and Legal Committee a sheaf of letters he had received. Brown moved for a public hearing on the matter. After a lively discussion, that motion was tabled.

County Board Chairman Scott Schwerer pointed out a hearing cannot be scheduled until the county receives notice about the proposed farm from the Illinois Ag Department.

Schwerer said there are two avenues to a public hearing. "The county board can either request a public informational hearing from the Illinois Department of Ag or 75 registered voters within McDonough County can petition the board to request that."

Schwerer added the county board would have 30 days to request the hearing once it receives notification from the state Ag Department. The department would have to schedule the hearing within 15 days of the request.

Professional Swine Management of Carthage wants to build and operate the hog farm in the southeast part of McDonough County, in El Dorado Township.
