The month opened with a blizzard that buried the region under at least a foot of snow. The wind created snow drifts of four feet or higher. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn asked that 60 counties - including all those in west-central Illinois - be declared federal disaster areas.

Macomb held its primary in February. Mike Inman clobbered two opponents to win the election for Macomb mayor. He will replace Mick Wisslead. Inman will be sworn in May 2. Two races for seats on the city council were won outright, while two other seats will be decided in a run-off election in April.

Also during February, Knox College named its new president. Teresa Amott will become the first woman to serve as the college's president when she takes office July 1.

The woman who was a driving force behind a large celebration in a tiny northeast Missouri town passed away during February. Ellen Krueger is credited with helping create something special with the St Patrick Day celebration in the town of St Patrick.
