Illinois lawmakers used their lame duck session to improve a big increase in the state income tax. The bill was quickly signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn. House members used the final day of the session to honor the late State Representative Rich Myers (R-Colchester).

Also during January, the Iowa Supreme Court's new Chief Justice defended the court's gay marriage ruling, the state of Missouri sued Clark County, and a new use was found for an old school building in Roseville.

Reporter Alex Degman was on hand when Western Illinois University named its new president, News Director Rich Egger told us about Dr Martin Luther King, Jr's other causes, and reporter Jason Parrott headed to the Mississippi River to see the majestic bald eagles that flock to the Keokuk dam every winter.
