Shop Talk - October 19
(wium) - The panelists discuss whether they think it's acceptable to take a photo from Facebook and use it with a news story.

For example, if someone who is not a public figure becomes the subject of a story, is it okay to use of a photo of him/her from Facebook? Are those photos subject to copyright laws? How can news organizations be sure they have a photo of the correct person?

In the past journalists have faced similar dilemmas when they tried to obtain a photo of someone who is not normally a news maker. In one case from a number of years ago, the Chicago Tribune had to run a correction after using the wrong photo.

Technology has changed but the principles of good journalism remain the same.
