Shop Talk - August 31
(wium) - The panelists discuss USA Today's decision to lay off 130 employees - or about 9% of its work force.

USA Today is the nation's second largest newspaper. It says the layoffs are needed as it tries to deliver stories more quickly to mobile devices and produce more coverage likely to sell advertising.

The panelists question how laying off workers will help the paper deliver stories more quickly to mobile devices. It seems personnel - especially reporters - will be needed to produce the content.

The idea of producing "more coverage likely to sell advertising" also raises red flags.
