Emphasis - July 9
The Illinois Stewardship Alliance is based in Springfield
(wium) - Rich Egger's guest is Wes King. He is Policy Coordinator for the Illinois Stewardship Alliance. They talk about this year's legislative proposals that dealt with local foods.

One proposal urged development of an on-line registry of organic and specialty crop farms. It's hoped Illinois farmers will consult the registry before spraying their fields in order to avoid pesticide drift onto organic farms.

Another measure is called the Farmers' Market Technology Improvement Program Act. It's designed to help educate farmers' markets on how to implement wireless LINK card systems, which could make fresh, locally grown food accessible to more people.

King says 95% of all food eaten in Illinois comes from out of state. He says the Illinois Stewardship Alliance would like to see a greater emphasis placed on promoting small farms, local foods and sustainable agriculture.
