State Representative Jerry Kearns (D-Keokuk)
(wium) - Jason Parrott's guest is Democratic State Representative Jerry Kearns of Keokuk.

Kearns and his fellow lawmakers recently wrapped up their 2010 session in Des Moines after 79 days. He says the focus was crafting Iowa's multi-billion dollar budget for next year during difficult economic times.

Kearns says lawmakers had to make some difficult cuts, but were able to back-fill some money in areas such as education. He says the government reorganization bill, approved by lawmakers, will save Iowa millions of dollars.

Kearns says lawmakers did get around to passing some non-budget related pieces of legislation. He points to changes in the conceal/carry law, a domestic violence prevention bill, and a series of benefits for veterans.

Kearns says he was disappointed that several labor-related bills did not move forward in Des Moines.
