On the third day of the month, a 19-year old man walked into the Farm King store in Macomb, got hold of some ammo from the store, and started shooting. Thus began a seven hour ordeal that ended with the gunman dead.

Also during the month, Illinois voters chose party nominees during the nation's first primaries of 2010. Across the river, Clark County residents approved a referendum to demolish the courthouse and build a new one, but historic preservationists have not given up their fight over the building.

The Roquette America plant in Keokuk received one of the largest fines ever in Iowa for environmental violations and the Illinois attorney general filed a complaint about pollution from a McDonough County coal mine.

A traveling Smithsonian exhibit parked in Monmouth, where the Buchanan Center for the Arts added a local twist, and top chefs from Western Illinois University engaged in heated competition to find out whose cuisine reigns supreme.
