(wium) - Rich Egger's guest is Lance Factor, professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Knox College.

Factor is author of the book Chapel in the Sky: Knox College's Old Main and Its Masonic Architect, which was recently released by Northern Illinois University Press.

Construction of Old Main was completed in 1857. It is Knox's most treasured building and is the only remaining site from the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858.

The book explores how architect Charles Ulricson secretly incorporated symbols from Freemasonry into the building. He had to do so on the sly because the founders of Knox College condemned Freemasonry and all secret societies as "ungodly." Factor says they would have viewed any kind of alchemical architecture as "black magic."

Factor's office is in Old Main. Over the years, he became curious about some of the building's features. Subsequent research uncovered details about Ulricson's background and eventually led Factor to write the book.
