Election - Fort Madison Tax Referendum
Voters are being asked to put more of the money generated by a local option sales tax into the general fund, which pays for most day-to-day city operations.
Fire Chief Joey Herrin says if voters agree to shift the tax dollars, his department will hire a new firefighter.
He says if the measure fails, one firefighter will be laid off.
Herrin says that would force his department to cut services.
The shift would also take as much as $200,000 away from designated street repair projects.
Voters overwhelmingly rejected a similar tax referendum more than two years ago.

- The tax would go from 60% General Fund/40% Streets to 80% General Fund/20% Streets. © Copyright 2009, wium
