SE Iowa Schools In Need Of Assistance
(2008-09-18)
DES MOINES, IA (wium) - Several Southeast Iowa schools are not meeting the proficiency guidelines set forth in the federal No Child Left Behind law.

Burlington High School, Keokuk High School, and Keokuk Middle School are among the 136 school buildings, across the state, considered to be in need of assistance.

That means the schools did not meet state standards in math or reading for at least two years in a row.

Elaine Watkins-Miller with the Iowa Department of Education says the standards apply to either all students in a grade or to specific sub-groups within a grade.

She says that if a sub-group of 30 students is not proficient, then the school is seen as not proficient.

Burlington and Keokuk High Schools are on the list for both reading and math while it is just math for Keokuk Middle School.

This is the fourth year in a row that the three Southeast Iowa school buildings are on the Schools in Need of Assistance List.

*Additional Information*
- The Keokuk School District is also one of 13, statewide, to be considered a district in need of assistance.
- That designation is based on math proficiency scores.
