Rain Could Hurt Crops This Year & Next Year
(2008-09-15)
Farmers hope to see this when they hit the fields next month.
LEE COUNTY, IA (wium) - Local farmers could feel the impact of the recent heavy rain beyond this fall.

Bob Dodds with the Lee County Extension Office says it could now be another four to six weeks before farmers will be able to harvest their corn or soybean crops.

He says the delay increases the possiblity of a harmful early frost.

Dodds says his biggest concern, though, is field conditions.

He says the large machinery could compact the mud, which could hurt next year's crop.

Dodds says that's because the plants would be shorter and the compacted soil would reduce air and moisture exchange levels.

He says both crops could really use about a month of warm and dry weather, with no more rain.
