Local Democrats Keeping Motivated
(2008-09-11)

COLCHESTER, IL (wium) - It's been a long presidential campaign. But McDonough County Democrats remain energized about Barack Obama.

Maggie Rosol is so energized that she's being sworn in as an American citizen on Friday September 12. She wants to make sure her voice is heard at the polls this fall.

Rosol is originally from Poland. She later lived in Canada before coming to the United States seven years ago. Rosol says she cares about the US - and she has a good reason to care. Her husband, who's an American, is serving overseas in the military.

Rosol says she supports Obama because he's addressing the important issues in the campaign and brings hope.

Rosal was one of hundreds of people who attended a fundraiser at The Brickyard in Colchester. McDonough County Republicans were also contacted for this story but said no fundraisers are scheduled for GOP nominee John McCain.

Organizers of the Obama fundraiser say it netted more than $11,000. That's a drop in the bucket when you consider the millions and millions of dollars being spent on this year's campaigns.

But State Senator John Sullivan (D-Rushville) says every little bit helps. He says a lot of Obama's support has come from individuals. Sullivan says the money can add up in a hurry if similar events are held across the country.

Sullivan also says fundraisers can motivate people to get more involved with a campaign. That can help a candidate keep the momentum going until election day, which is now less than eight weeks away.
