Remembering 9-11-01
Tri States Public Radio General Manager Dorie Vallillo initially thought a small plane hit the Twin Towers in New York. But she says when the second plane came into view, it was clear this was something very different. Vallillo says she lost her young daughter Emily the year before, and is grateful Emily did not have to see the attacks. Vallillo thinks it would be an awful thing for a child to absorb.
Morning Edition host Julie Root was in high school at the time. Root heard the news while at her locker between classes. That day still impacts her life because she has many family members and friends who are now serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Southeast Iowa Bureau Chief Jason Parrott was a WIU student on 9-11-01. He was working at the student radio station when someone called with the news. Parrott says every generation has its own "Where were you when...?" moment. He says 9-11-01 will always be the "Where were you when...?" moment for his generation.
You can listen to more from Vallillo, Root, Parrott and other Tri States Public Radio employees by clicking on the audio button. The piece was produced by Operations Manager Ken Thermon. The music is "Deep Blue Day" by Brian Eno.
