City Loan Likely for Arts Group
(2008-09-09)
The former Maurice's building
MACOMB, IL (wium) - Macomb aldermen appear willing to make a six-figure loan to the West Central Illinois Arts Center.

The WCIAC could receive the $100,000 loan as early as next week. Last month, the organization purchased the former Maurice's building on the Macomb Courthouse Square for $114,000.

The center needs the loan to finish paying off the building and to make numerous renovations. Mayor Mick Wisslead says the city supports the interest-free loan because having an arts center will increase tourism and economic development.

WCIAC board member Nancy Crossman says the arts center will provide many opportunities to teach and learn the arts. Crossman says the center will provide gallery and theater space as well as art, voice, and dance studios.

Crossman says the center plans to hold an opening public reception within the next few months.

Additional Information:

*The $100,000 loan will be given to the West Central Illinois Arts Center up front. The money is coming from TIF funds and will be paid back to TIF over the next 10 years.

*The WCIAC needs to pay $102,000 to the building's seller by September 29, 2008. By that date, the organization will officially own the property. The arts group has already made a down payment on the building. It has raised some of the money to put toward the project but says more donations are needed.

*Crossman says the WCIAC will apply for grants and will receive money from leasing and renting space.

*The building is three stories tall. Crossman says the first floor will house gallery and retail space. The second floor will contain art, voice, and dance studios. Plans for the third floor call for turning it into a space for theater performances and a reception area.
