Keokuk Police Training with Tasers
(2008-08-28)
KEOKUK, IA (wium) - Members of the Keokuk Police Department could soon be armed with a new law enforcement tool.

Administrative Captain Dave Hinton says the department has purchased eight Tasers. He says it could be a week or so before officers complete the training required to operate the devices.

Hinton says Tasers are effective tools for officers, especially during a struggle. A Taser delivers a five-second electrical current that basically incapacitates a person.

Each shift will have access to the devices.

He says the department spent more than two years researching the effectiveness of Tasers and the risks associated with them.

Each unit cost about $1,000.
