Lay-Offs In Burlington
(2008-08-28)
BURLINGTON, IA (wium) - A Des Moines County industry has laid off more than two dozen employees.

30 employees at Champion Spark Plug in Burlington lost their jobs earlier this week. Ten others are taking early retirement.

Paula Silver is a spokeswoman for Federal Mogul Corporation, which is the parent company of Champion Spark Plug.

She says (through an e-mail) that Federal Mogul had to adjust its workforce to account for the downturn in the current automotive industry. Silver says customer demand will determine whether these jobs can be restored.

There are 370 employees at the Burlington facility.

Silver does not believe the layoffs will impact Federal Mogul's attempt to secure state funding to upgrade its Des Moines County plant.

The corporation is seeking $500,000 in Community Economic Betterment Account funds.
