Kid Zone Enrollment Drops
(2008-08-20)
KEOKUK, IA (wium) - It looks like enrollment in the Keokuk School District's before-and-after school program for younger students will be lower than expected to start the new school year.

Kid Zone Director Laurie Mendenhall says the district anticipated a 30% drop in attendance after instituting a participation fee.

She says enrollment is down 60%, compared to the same time last year.

Mendenhall says the impact is really seen in families with more than one child attending Kid Zone.

Mendenhall says the fee was developed because Kid Zone lost its federal and state funding.

She says letters are being sent to local businesses and industries to see if they are willing to sponsor students whose parents cannot afford the fee.

Kid Zone is also applying for grant money.

*Additional Information*
- Mendenhall says the scholarships would be available to families with more than one child attending Kid Zone.
- She says the parents or guardians would have to pay for one child and then the others could be covered under the scholarships.
- The cost is based on income levels.
