Lawmaker Says Iowa Smoking Ban Still Possible
(2008-03-17)
(wium) - One Southeast Iowa lawmaker says the state legislature will eventually agree on a state-wide public smoking ban.

Rep. Phil Wise (D-Keokuk) does not believe the issue is dead for this session, even though the Senate rejected a House-approved plan that would have exempted casinos, bars, and restaurants from the ban.

He believes an agreement will be reached very soon. He says the final proposal, though, will have to include a few exemptions.

Wise says the most likely exemptions would be for casinos, due to a potential loss of revenue from the public smoking ban.

Wise says that Gov. Chet Culver will sign the ban that comes out of conference committee.

Additional Information
* Wise says 400+ Iowans die from second-hand smoke each year.
* He says passing a public smoking ban will be as historic as the creation of Community Colleges in Iowa, the abolition of the death penalty, and economic development efforts.
