WIU Adds Degree for Museum Staff
(2007-12-21)
Associate Provost Barb Bailey
(wium) - Western Illinois is adding two new degrees to its offerings.

They are a bachelor's degree in anthropology and a master's in museum studies.

Associate Provost Barb Bailey says the former will be offered only at the Macomb campus for the time being.

She says it was added because of recent changes in the department and a growing number of students expressing interest in the major.

The master's degree in museum studies will be offered at the Quad City campus.

Bailey says the course will be taught in cooperation with the Figge Art Museum in Davenport.

She says most courses will be taught on evenings or on weekends, making it an appealing field for non-traditional students.

More information:

Both the anthropology major and the museum studies degree involve several departments and sometimes different colleges.

Bailey says there are more than 180 museums in the region, which should mean the course work will be welcomed by staff at many of them.

When the anthropology degree was brought before the board of trustees, it had a letter of support signed by students from several different majors.
