Changes Possible for Unpopular Ordinance
(2007-07-11)

(wium) - Hundreds of people filled Macomb's VFW Hall for a public hearing on a controversial ordinance. The law requires driveways, parking lots, and other off-street parking areas to be paved.

Enforcement of the law was scheduled to begin later this year, but the public outcry might lead to some changes in the ordinance.

The Macomb Planning Commission voted to recommend that current properties be exempted. Off-street parking at new construction and major renovations will need to be paved.

Aldermen will hold first reading of that revised ordinance Monday night.

Additional information:

*Aldermen asked the planning commission to review the ordinance after they caught an earful about it.

*No one at the public hearing spoke in favor of the ordinance. Many people were upset over the potential cost of having to pave their driveways. Others pointed out that the city owns many unpaved streets, alleys and parking lots.

*The city council can override the planning commission's recommendation, but it will require a supermajority of seven of the nine aldermen to do so.
