Fort Madison City Council Vacancy
(2007-06-26)
(wium) - Fort Madison is in the market for a new city council member.

At-Large Alderman Greg Smith is stepping down after a year and a half in office.

He says the decision came about because some education and administration courses he will be taking as part of his job with the Fort Madison School District will meet on the night of city council meetings.

Smith says he enjoyed his time as alderman and would run for office again.

He says he is proud of the council's work to secure the Siemen's plant and to balance two budgets during his time on the panel.

The Fort Madison City Council is expected to accept Smith's resignation at its July 3 meeting and appoint a replacement August 21.

Iowa code requires a vacancy be filled within 40 days.

The timeline may need to be moved up because July 3 and August 21 are nearly 50 days apart.
