Iowa Elections - November 2009
Run-Offs Likely in Keokuk
There are five people in the race for mayor: Chuck Betts, Gordon Blankenship, Per Malm, Carol Mardis, and Tom Marion. Four others are seeking a 2-year term as alderman at-large on the city council: Brian Barnes, Lonnie McCarty, Brandon Parsons, and Daniel Winn.
Lee County Auditor Anne Pedersen says the winners of those contests must secure 50% + 1 vote to claim victory November 3. She says anything less triggers a run-off.
Pedersen says Keokuk is large enough to hold either a primary and general election or a general election and a run-off. She says it is cheaper to utilize option two because there is not always a run-off.
The last run-off in Keokuk was in 2003. Bill Olmsted defeated Ross Zetterlund to win a seat on the city council.
Pedersen says only the top two vote-getters in a race would move on to a run-off. She says any potential run-off would take place Tuesday, December 1.
Pedersen says write-in votes could push a race with just two candidates to a run-off.
