Keokuk At-Large - John Helenthal (challenger)
(2011-11-29)
John Helenthal
(wium) - John Helenthal says he is seeking a seat on the Keokuk City Council because he is a problem solver who wants to get the entire city involved in city government.

He says instead of complaining, he decided to jump in the race for the At-Large seat being vacated by Dan Winn, who is running for Mayor.

Helenthal says he will listen to people and will care about what they say and believe because he feels everyone has good ideas, but they are not being tapped into.

He sees the biggest challenge facing the city as being the economy.

Helenthal says improving it requires people to start believing in local businesses and opportunities.

He says it is important for people to start talking up the benefits of Keokuk because word-of-mouth is the best way to sell a community.

Helenthal says he would also promote events to get people downtown so they can learn, or remember, what is available.

He says he would support the creation of a special fund that could be used to help downtown business owners stabilize their properties so they can grow.

Helenthal says it is important for the city to focus on the worst streets with its reconstruction program, not just the busiest streets.

He says he would also favor more cost-effective ways to fix more streets.
