Green Party Gubernatorial Candidate Wants To Keep National Guard At Home
If elected... Rich Whitney says he'll use his authority over the National Guard to prevent additional troops from being sent overseas. He says the National Guard should remain on the homefront. "It would be hard for me to conceive of any appropriate role in any foreign adventure or foreign intervention where use of the National Guard, what does the name imply... they're to be protecting us at home. It seems to me that would be a highly inappropriate use."
While there are legal questions regarding a Governor's authority as Commander of the National Guard... Whitney backs a growing national movement that is urging state politicians to reject additional troop requests.
Whitney is a Carbondale Attorney who garnered 10 percent of the vote in his 2006 gubernatorial bid. He's announced last week he'll run again in 2010.
