Lee County Looks For E-911 Options
(2009-07-08)
(wium) - Lee County could lose access to a transmission tower currently used for E-911 service.

Iowa Public Television owns the tower in central Lee County but rents the land it sits on. The previous landowner, Faeth Orchards, recently sold the property to a group of investors.

County Attorney Mike Short says the new owners of the land either want IPTV to buy the property (for three times the purchase price) or tear the tower down. He says IPTV's previous lease was for $3,000/year while the new owners want $1,700/month.

Short says a temporary deal is in place allowing IPTV will rent the space for 90 days, effective June 22.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Gary Folluo says a decision must be made soon, given the timeline and Lee County's use of the tower for E-911 service. He says the county will look for another tower site or negotiate with the new owners.

County Attorney Mike Short says condemnation is a third option. He says that could cost more than $40,000.

Representatives of Iowa Public Television will be invited to a special meeting, July 10, to discuss the future of the tower. It's unclear if the new owners will attend.
