Keokuk Could Get Sewer Money
(2009-04-17)
Sewer work will get underway this summer in Keokuk.
(wium) - Public Works Director Gerald Moughler says the state has released its initial list of water and sewer projects to be funded with money from the federal economic stimulus package. He says the city is in line for around $3-million.

Moughler says Keokuk would use the money to repair, replace, and separate sewer lines near Wells Carey Elementary School and near Belknap Boulevard. He says the Wells Carey Project will go out for bid in late June with construction beginning soon after.

Moughler says the money would come in the form of grants as opposed to low-interest loans. He says the state could release its final list of funded projects by early next month.

The Environmental Protection Agency has told Keokuk that it must separate its sanitary and storm-water sewer system. The estimated price tag is around $75-million.

Moughler says Keokuk is awaiting word from the EPA as to whether it can conduct special tests to determine the actual impact of run-off into the Mississippi River.

Fort Madison and Burlington have already agreed to the EPA's separation request.
