Bicycle Restrictions Could Hamper SEIA Trail
(2009-03-03)
(wium) - The roughly 20-mile Flint River Trail would run from the Port of Burlington to Big Hollow Recreation Area. It would pass through Starr's Cave Park & Preserve.

The problem: Biking is not allowed through the state preserve.

Mike Norris with the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission says the county is willing to work with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources on a solution. He says, "What we are hoping to do is rehab some of the trails in the park and get approval to construct an additional trail that would lead from the west of the park towards Highway 61."

Norris does not know when a decision on bicycle use will be made. He says an appeal has been filed with the Iowa DNR.

In the meantime, Des Moines County will focus on other portions of the trail.

Norris says the first phase of the Flint River Trail could be completed this fall.
