City & Park District Close To Agreement
(2008-07-15)
Chandler Park
(wium) - The City of Macomb and the park district have an agreement in principle on maintenance of city-owned parks.

The three-year deal calls for the city to pay the park district $75,000 per year to take care of Spring Lake Park. Under the current arrangement, the park district is paid $55,000.

The new deal calls for the park district to continue to operate Glenwood Park, the pool and Compton Park. The city will be responsible for Chandler Park.

Park Commissioner Jim Bloom says the agreement was reached after he held a one-on-one meeting with Mayor Mick Wisslead. He says the get-together went very smoothly.

The park board approved the deal in principle during its July 15 meeting. Attorneys will finalize the details before park commissioners take a final vote.

Additional information:

*The two sides will next need to work together on the future of Glenwood Pool. The general feeling is that the pool will last for just a few more years.

*If the city and park district agree to build a new pool, the money might need to come from a voter-approved bond issue. The park district lacks enough bonding authority to pay for the project so the referendum would have to be placed on the ballot by the city.
