Macomb Parks Talks Get More Complicated
(2008-06-10)
Spring Lake Park is one of the places at issue in negotiations between the city and the park district.
(wium) - A newly discovered 60-year old agreement is impacting talks between the City of Macomb and the Macomb Park District.

The two sides have been negotiating since the beginning of the year over who should maintain several parks believed to be owned by the city. But the agreement from 1948 says the city turned over ownership to the park district.

The issue brings into question whether the city has the authority to negotiate a new park maintenance contract.

The city hopes to clear up the issue before next week's city council meeting.

Aldermen spent more than 20 minutes talking about the issue during their June 9 committee meeting. You can listen to that discussion by clicking on the audio button.

Additional information:

*Second Ward Alderman Ed Lavin said negotiations were failing because some members of the park district are arrogant and are undermining the city's negotiating committee.

*The parks in question are Compton, Spring Lake, Glenwood, and the Dudley Street Skate Park. Glenwood Pool has also been the subject of discussions.
