Aldermen Reject Parks Plan
MACOMB, IL
(wium) -
The City of Macomb is not yet ready to play ball with the Macomb Park District.
The two taxing bodies have been debating which should be responsible for maintaining several parks and Glenwood Pool. The city's negotiating team was prepared to pitch its latest proposal to the park district, but aldermen rejected the plan on a 5-to-4 vote.
Aldermen who voted against the proposal were Richard Vick, Dave Dorsett, Tim Lobdell, Ken Zahnle and Dennis Moon.
Lobdell said "I don't think it's our position to step in and do park programming when we have another taxing body that's taking money to do that."
Mayor Mick Wisslead said the city's neogitating committee will need to head back to the drawing board.
The city council spent 25 minutes debating the issue during its June 2 meeting. You can listen to that discussion by clicking on the audio button.
Additional information:
*The city's negotiating committee proposed taking over all the responsibilities for Glenwood, Compton, and Chandler Parks plus the Dudley Street skateboard park. The panel also proposed that the park district operate Glenwood Pool and Spring Lake Park.
*The park district indicated it would be willing to maintain the city-owned parks for $110,000 per year, which is double what it's currently paid. It also wants the city to cover the cost of running the pool. © Copyright 2012, wium
