WIU Focusing on Security and Maintenance
(2008-03-13)
(wium) - Western Illinois University will upgrade one of its campus security measures, and it hopes to upgrade chillers in several buildings.

The security improvement concerns the emergency call boxes that are already located throughout campus. Their blue lights make them easy to spot, and soon those emergency stations will be easy to hear. The university will add public address systems to the boxes so that those on campus can be alerted to an immediate emergency.

As for the chillers, they are located in Horrabin, Currens, and Stipes Halls. President Al Goldfarb says it does not make long-term sense to rent portable chillers to cool those buildings. He hopes the state will approve a capital bill to provide money for replacements.

Goldfarb estimates the campus has about $100 million in critical deferred maintenance. He says it's important for some money to come in from the state so that WIU can take care of its facilities.

Goldfarb talks about deferred maintenance in an interview that you can listen to by clicking on the audio button.

Additional information:

*WIU says the state provided just 27% of its operating revenue this school year. As a result, the Board of Trustees hiked costs for students for next school year:

Tuition will rise 9.5%.

Room & Board will rise 4.5% for a double occupancy room

Fees will jump 11.5% on the Macomb campus, but decrease 1% on the Quad Cities campus.

*Those fee increases are for incoming students only. Those already attending WIU are covered by its cost guarantee program.
